McCready Media Arts is currently developing the feature length documentary film as part of Julia Mercier’s transmedia project.
Synopsis
In the heart of the McGill campus, in a historic 26-room barn, the painter James Simon lives in his own museum; a living space filled with his murals, which he calls his ‘inner labyrinth’. Every year, James hits the road. He then transforms the landscape into his open-air ‘outer labyrinth’. In his yellow truck, a veritable mobile studio, he travels across the American deserts in search of scenes to paint, like a bee gathering the world’s nectar. From the salt flats of Salt Lake Flats to the bluish shadows of Arizona’s cacti, the artist draws on the precision of reality and the depth of the moment.
At the point where the path travelled exceeds the horizon yet to be crossed, Julia Mercier films this chosen father, this kindred spirit and visionary, like a mirror, seeking to capture the imprint of life in its most fleeting form. By scrutinising a grain of salt or a cactus until they discern the infinite within them, James and the filmmaker take a gamble that reality is a dream to be deciphered. The camera becomes the echo of this quest, where one exists to reveal the voice of the other.

Au cœur du campus de McGill, dans une grange historique de 26 pièces, le peintre James Simon habite son propre musée ; un espace de vie investi de ses murales qu’il nomme son labyrinthe intérieur. Chaque année, James prend la route. Il transforme alors le territoire en son labyrinthe extérieur à ciel ouvert. À bord de son camion jaune, véritable studio mobile, il parcourt les déserts américains à la recherche de scènes à peindre comme une abeille récoltant le nectar du monde. Des salins de Salt Lake Flats aux ombres bleutées des cactus de l’Arizona, l’artiste puise dans la précision du réel, la profondeur de l’instant.
À l’étape où le chemin parcouru dépasse l’horizon qui reste à franchir, Julia Mercier filme ce père d’élection, de parenté d’âme et de vision, comme un miroir, cherchant à fixer l’empreinte du vivant dans ce qu’elle a de plus fugace. En scrutant un grain de sel ou un cactus jusqu’à y déceler l’infini, James et la cinéaste font le pari que la réalité est un rêve à déchiffrer. La caméra devient l’écho de cette quête, où l’un existe pour révéler la voix de l’autre.
