Quebec’s law on transparency and ethics in lobbying is flawed: any non-profit organization that does not represent employers, unions, or a profession is exempt from registering with the provincial lobbyists registry. As a result, well-funded interest groups can exert undue influence on our post-secondary institutions and our ministers of education without the public’s knowledge. In a publicly funded education system, this lack of transparency undermines the democratic foundations of our province by threatening academic freedom.

La loi québécoise sur la transparence et l’éthique en matière de lobbying est défaillante : n’importe quel organisme sans but lucratif qui ne représente pas le patronat, un syndicat ou une profession, n’a pas à s’enregistrer au registre provincial des lobbyistes. Conséquences: des groupes d’intérêt bien financés peuvent exercer une influence indue sur nos institutions post-secondaires et nos ministres de l’éducation sans que le public n’en ait conscience. Dans un système d’éducation financé par les contribuables, cette opacité ébranle les fondements démocratiques de notre province en menaçant la liberté académique.
